The design of glassware for Soxhlet extraction of compound using solvents
What is soxhlet extraction?
Soxhlet extraction is a method used to extract soluble components and impurities from a solid which has a limited solubility within a solvent. The fact that small amounts of solvent can be recirculated continuously through siphoning allows for effective separation in an efficient manor whilst the process can continue unmonitored.
Soxhlet extractor body for collecting the solvent as it is distilled & extracting the compounds of interest out of the thimbles. The type shown opposite has a ground glass tapered socket at the top restricting the size of samples used & is used for lower siphoning volumes.
Pressure equalising funnel used in the recovery of the solvent at the end of the extraction. The stopcock is left open during the extraction then closed to recover the solvent at the end for future use. Condenser (Allihn) for refluxing, different types available. Soxhlet extraction setup’s manufactured to specific specifications for rapid cycling of solvents.
